I have gone camping and survived to tell about it!!!!

Those of you who know me-well you all know me-would never consider me to be much of a camper.  I have an aversion to most things involving the outdoors.  Sure, I enjoy looking at beautiful mountains, lakes and streams, but please do not ask me to actually get out of the car to experience them in all their glory.  All that dirt-all of those bugs-go to the bathroom where? Please!  When mom gave Katy a sandbox for her second birthday, I am sure that she knew full well that I was not going to let Katy actually get in that thing.  It took a lot of coaxing to get me to place my clean, germ free little girl into a box filled with what was essentially dirt.  Luckily for Katy, cooler heads prevailed and she and Emma spent many fun-filled years (their fun-not mine) digging in the sand.  I had Eric change the sand every year, though.
So, it comes as no surprise that we have yet to go camping as a family.  Eric and I did sleep in a tent once at my family reunion, but I only remember all the years we spent in hotel rooms near the reunion.
Well folks, those days are over!  Since last July, we have been owners of a pretty neat camper.  Kem and Etta gave it to us as they were "downsizing" to a cute Airstream.  Eric purchased a truck last fall to carry the camper.  It was way too cold to try it out by then (whew!) so Eric set his sights on spring.  Since my excuses for not going were running short, I booked us for an overnighter at the Bruneau Dunes.   The dunes are located about 30 minutes outside of Mtn. Home.  I had been before, but never as a camper.  We had heard good things about spring camping there, such as generally mild weather conditions (no snow) and access to an observatory.  It is out in the middle of acres of gorgeous farmland with nearly no lights or buildings to obstruct the view of the night sky.  Only one problem-someone failed to mention the wind.
Look at the photos!  It was crazy, non-stop, hair-raising wind.  We had sun, we had a beautiful view, we had body-numbing wind!  We were thankful for the shelter of the camper. Emma was so sad that we were unable to eat outside or build a fire.  Seeing the stars was not enough for her.  All she wanted was fire and a meal on the picnic table!  We did not even get to wow the kids with Jiffy Pop!  Next trip I guess!  Yep, you read that right.  I am already planning the trip the reunion and then Redfish Lake.
Seriously, though . . .we had a good time.  We met up with a few classmates of the girls, hiked up one of the dunes, got tons of sand in our shoes and pants, walked a trail around the lake, listened to a presentation about comets, saw an awesome view of Saturn and 4 of its moons and spent a cozy night sleeping in the wind-rocked camper.  We were near warm showers and almost clean bathrooms.  The guy at the observatory said we were too early in the year to see the scorpions--oh, darn it all!--but we did see and hear many birds.  It really was fun!
I am glad that Eric had/has the patience to deal with me and all of my quirky (ok, annoying) habits concerning the great outdoors. It might be too late to completely convert me, but the girls are well on their way to becoming camping enthusiasts.  Thank you, dear!

Then and Now . . .

"Happy Anniversary, baby, I got you on my mind!"
We were married 14 years ago today.  I can hardly believe it.  Time really does fly when you are having fun!  Eric found the photo from our wedding day to scan for me tonight.  It reminded me of what a wonderful day we had.  So many of our family & friends were able to celebrate with us and it truly was a weekend to remember.  We still appreciate all that was done for us.  Our parents were very generous and for that I am still thankful.  I am also thankful that Eric & I have enjoyed our journey together.  We look forward to many more "happy" anniversaries!
On another note, I am really thankful that I discovered new glasses and Eric got rid of that mustache and ponytail.
I have to get going.  It took me all day to get to this computer and I have not had a dance with my husband.  We still have to take a spin to our song . . ."Love is all Around"

Strike!!!

Emma had her birthday party earlier today.  She had a bowling party at the Boise State University games center.  Nine 7 years olds running around having a good time!  It was great fun. Besides the opening of presents, Emma's favorite part was when they finally turned out the lights and turned on the disco ball.  I enjoy the BSU bowling alley.  It is pretty small, with only about 8 lanes.  It is near our house and we love how clean and smoke free it has remained.  It is a great place for kids.
Grammy, Uncle Ryan and Aunt Starla also came to the party.  We had croissant sandwiches, strawberry applesauce, gogurts, and cupcakes.  I was amazed at how little the girls ate.  They just wanted the cupcakes--big surprise I suppose!
Well, another year under her belt.  Happy party day Miss Emma!  You are a well-loved young lady.

Happy 7th Birthday Emma!

A few short years ago, this little bundle of red-headed joy entered our world! She has made our life infinitely more interesting and we are better for it. . .My favorite word to describe Emma is sassy and  I often blame it on her hair color!

Happy Birthday Noodle!  We love you bunches!

Roll on. . .

Eric and I surprised the girls with a trip to a roller skating rink in Nampa.  Nampa is only about half an hour from Boise--out in what used to be farm country.  It is home to the only rink, the RollerDrome,  for many miles.  I'll tell you what--I had a blast!  I have not skated since the mid-80's and I was fairly certain that I would spend most of the session on my bottom.  Thankfully, that was not the case as I managed to stay upright for the entire time.   As for Katy & Emma, well, let's just say they are beginners.  It was their first time on real skates and I thought they did a great job.  Both had good attitudes as we took turns around the rink.  I tried taking them at the same time, but that proved too hazardous.  Eric was not participating in my trip down memory lane, so he sat on the bench and took pictures and video of our fun.   After several trips around the rink, Katy & Emma gained a bit more confidence.  They both had a few spills, but nothing too bad.  Emma's last fall made her "hungry" so she sat out the last 20 minutes hoping for a trip to the snack bar.   Lucky for her, we won a prize in the raffle--free cotton candy.  She said it made her day!
I look forward to spending more time at the rink this summer.  I am still humming "YMCA" and "Kung Fu Fighting". . .
